Sidney William Clements was born on 29th May 1908 in Soham (Newmarket Q3-1908 3B:481), baptised in Soham on 19th June 1908, son of Charles and Rose CLEMENTS (née REEVE), of Qua Fen Common, Soham.

1911 census...Aged 2, he was at Qua Fen Common with his father Charles CLEMENTS [28] farm labourer; his mother Rose [23] and brother Frederick [under 1 month], all were born in Soham. There had been another sibling, Eva Eliza, but she had died in 1908, less than one year old.

His father Charles Sidney was killed on the Somme in 1916. see here



In the 1939 register, a general labourer, he was at 71 Downfields, Soham with his widowed mother Rose [3-7-1887] and brother Frederick C [8-3-1911] a general labourer.


Sidney died in Norfolk ( Acle Q3-1942 4B:39) and was buried in Soham on 9th June 1942.

546 Coast Regiment, Royal Artillery was first instituted at Cromer as 8 Coast Artillery Group in October 1940, re-named 546 Coast Regiment in June 1941.

Nothing has been found to indicate the cause of Sidney's death. A captain in his unit, Capt.David St. Patrick Whittick STATHER also died this day, but his death was registered in Spilsby.
